Red Boiling Springs / Snail Male - Split Cassette (Crooked Branch Collections, 2024)
Long running Portland via Alaska via Nashville noise project Red Boiling Springs teams up with Snail Male for an uneasy paean
to the forsaken and the supernatural.
RBS is up first and posts two tracks of ethereal queasiness, the first a straight up raver complete with absurdist vocals, spiraling
delay, and what sounds like someone playing drums on the wing of a jumbo jet at forty thousand feet; the second is slower and
more intentional, a tangled meditation that hits somewhere near the nexus of heavy drone, power electronics, and ambient
synth, if such a place even exists.
On the flip, Snail Male exhibits two new pieces inspired by alien abduction experiences, the first chronicling a desperate pursuit
and frightful capture in the dessert, the second spinning a brainsick tale of madness on a slab, of being immobilized, and of
being reduced to an experiment; the terror is consistently palpable, but largely unheard.
This split constitutes Snail Male’s second release and the first Red Boiling Springs material released in nearly four years; it’s
been a long time coming and we’re more than a little pleased to finally have it out there.
