The Furnace "The Desire to Be Human: Collected Works 2021-23" Cassette (Lavender Dream, 2023)
"The Desire to Become Human" is the debut album from The Furnace. Through harsh, overblown industrial pop beats and throat shredding screams, Kaiden Jackman delves into the human psyche in an effort to purge any and all negativity in a cathartic rage. Their debut album features three previously released singles (one featuring a slightly updated mix) and six new tracks worked on between 2021 and 2023 and performed at shows earlier in 2023.
The artist had this to say:
"I find the words difficult to grasp with this project. What has been a few years in the making will be finally unleashed to the world not with a bang, but with a whimper. A bit unfitting for such an explosive sounding project but I feel like anything greater would clash with the vulnerability in my words. A lot of these songs were pulled from very dark points, whether lyrically or instrumentally.
'Soulock' was about my desire to be loved, my feelings of body dysmorphia, my 'desire to be human'. 'Always Watching' was built around paranoia and fear; even if instrumental, the ramblings that went along with it on the Bandcamp single release reflected that. 'Hollow Points' was about both wishing for a more comfortable life and also hoping I can make a change for the better before my time here runs out. In the meantime I sat on instrumentals made in anger, depressive episodes and frustration around the global state of affairs waiting for the right words to hop out to convey these feelings.
At some point I felt like I had to put these out properly, with a full wave of promotion. But I felt like sitting on them for another month to promote my vulnerability like a slick promoter shill felt like the worst thing to do. It's 9:46pm Thursday September 14th and I'm ready to move on. It's time to put these out and take on the next task. I shall conquer; I shall rise. Endless and impossible love."
All songs recorded from January 2021 to September 2023. All songs written and performed by Kaiden Jackman except Always Watching (Written and performed by Kaiden Jackman and Ariel Ulysses).
